Remarriage Divorce Statistics in the United States

In America, almost 75 percent of divorced persons remarry legally and the remarriage is done within 4 years after obtaining divorce. About 33 percent of divorced individuals remarry within a year, after their divorce is declared as legal. It has been observed that in case of 50 percent marriages in the United States, minimum one of the spouses remarries. Such a marriage is mostly a second marriage, however it could also be the third, fourth or further marriage.

During the 1980s and 1990s, there was a crucial alteration in the rate of remarriages. The rate of legal marriages dropped and along with it the rate of cohabitation increased. It was frequently found that prior to the legal remarriage, the couples cohabited and the duration of cohabitation varies from some days to several years.

The trend of remarriages seen in the United States is also witnessed in Canada, Australia, Europe and South Korea. In case of some Asian nations, divorced and remarried individuals have to face shame and dishonor. Due to such circumstances, collecting the divorce statistics of remarriage becomes a tough process. The remarried persons present themselves as first married in several cases.

In Nigeria, if death or divorce takes place, the single person remarries quickly and the rate of remarriage is high. In northern Nigeria, the traditional Muslim Hausa society exists. The divorce and remarriage rate of this society is one of the highest in the world. It has been recorded that in the Dominican Republic, the remarriage rate has dropped during the 1990s due to the financial scenario. In this place, the job market is worsening and men are finding themselves unemployed. Consequently, women are opting single parenting to marriage.

In 1995, women in the United States belonging to all races and from 15 to 44 years of age were analyzed. It was found that -

  • 15 percent of divorced women remarry within 1 year of divorce
  • 39 percent of divorced women remarry within 3 years of divorce
  • 54 percent of divorced women remarry within 5 years of divorce
  • 75 percent of divorced women remarry within 10 years of divorce

If the women are classified on the basis of age, then in case of those who are less than 25 years -

  • 17 percent of divorced women remarry within 1 year of divorce
  • 41 percent of divorced women remarry within 3 years of divorce
  • 57 percent of divorced women remarry within 5 years of divorce
  • 81 percent of divorced women remarry within 10 years of divorce

In case of women, who are more than 25 years of age -

  • 14 percent of divorced women remarry within 1 year of divorce
  • 37 percent of divorced women remarry within 3 years of divorce
  • 51 percent of divorced women remarry within 5 years of divorce
  • 68 percent of divorced women remarry within 10 years of divorce
