In 1984, Michael first met Juanita on a blind date. On December 31, 1987, Michael proposed to her in Chicago. Their marriage took place in September 1989. On the date of wedding, Michael was 26 years of age and Juanita was 30. Further, they had 3 children as follows.

A DNA test was conducted and this proved that Michael was not the father of Knafel's child. Consequently, on July 21, 2006, an Illinois Judge in Cook County declared that Michael did not owe Karla 5 million USD.
